依护坡的功能可将其概分为两种：(A)仅为抗风化及抗冲刷的坡面保护工，该保护工并不承受侧向土压力，如喷凝土护坡，格框植生护坡，植生护坡等均属此类，仅适用于平缓且稳定无滑动之虞的边坡上。(B)提供抗滑力之挡土护坡，大致可区分为：(a)刚性自重式挡土墙(如：砌石挡土墙，重力式挡土墙，倚壁式挡土墙，悬壁式挡土墙，扶壁式挡土墙)，(b)柔性自重式挡土墙(如：蛇笼挡土墙，框条式挡土墙，加劲式挡土墙)，(c)锚拉式挡土墙(如：锚拉式格梁挡土墙，锚拉式排桩挡土墙)。
